Lazlo’s Utilizes Geothermal Energy

Lincoln-based Lazlo's Brewery & Grill is utilizing geothermal energy to reduce its heating and cooling costs. The restaurant has created a network of 270' deep holes connected to a series of underground pipes at its 59th and Old Cheney location which provide access to what the EPA refers to as the most energy-efficient, environmentally safe and cost-effective technology currently available. The system draws heat from the earth in the winter and extracts heat from the restaurant in the summer. According to the Lincoln Electric System (LES), geothermal systems can generate savings of 30-50 percent in heating and cooling costs and can reduce building maintenance costs due to their relative simplicity and reliability. Lazlo's use of the system will also benefit LES by reducing the demand for electricity in the summer and thereby delaying the construction of high-cost generating facilities.

Lazlo's is the first Nebraska restaurant to use this technology. In addition, its parent company, Telesis, Inc. built the state's first geothermal cold-storage warehouse, located in Waverly.  We here at WasteCap are proud to have Telesis as a member and admire their dedication to preserving the environment.

Earth Day Events

Clean Your Files Week is April 18th – 22nd

Take a day during the week to clean out old cabinets and rid yourself of extra paper.  “Clean Your Files Week” is an activity supporting Earth Day 2005 that offers office workers the opportunity to empty file drawers and fill recycling bins. Office workers can purge their workplace of a wide variety of materials in files including computer paper, letterhead, white and colored ledger paper, phone books, cards, and envelopes.

“Clean Your Files Week” offers an opportunity for businesses to support Earth Day within their organizations, increase awareness about recycling and help to conserve valuable resources by recycling more office paper.  Individuals with home businesses are also encouraged to participate.  They can deposit their old files in the residential mixed paper recycling container at recycling drop-off sites located throughout the city.

EPA Closes RCRA Hotline

On April 1, 2005, the RCRA hotline closed. Now you’ll be referred to the Agency’s website to get your questions answered.  Participants of Environmental Resource Center’s hazardous waste seminars have always been able to call EPA for answers to their most challenging questions. With the demise of the RCRA hotline, they are opening this up to others. For details on how you can take advantage of this service, see:

EPA Hazardous Waste Manifest Changes

EPA is improving the tracking of hazardous waste shipments by establishing a nationally standardized manifest form.  This new form makes the nation's hazardous waste tracking system more efficient by replacing various state formats with one national form.  This streamlined approach will benefit waste handlers and regulators by reducing the costs and time associated with managing multiple forms, while maintaining the safety of EPA's well established cradle-to-grave hazardous waste tracking system.

By employing a streamlined and consistent national standard, hazardous waste handlers can better track complicated shipments, such as container residues, rejected wastes and international shipments.  The new form also makes it easier to collect data for hazardous waste reporting.  The Manifest will be printed to precise EPA specifications that ensure uniformity, and each form will carry a unique preprinted manifest tracking number.  EPA will oversee the registration process.  Waste handlers can generate their own manifest forms once they have registered with the Agency.  Record keeping, reporting requirements, and other changes also vastly improve and modernize hazardous waste tracking.  The new form will be phased in over an 18-month transition period.  Once the new form is in place, handlers will be able to obtain new forms from any source that has registered with EPA to print and distribute them.
