Federal Government Should Do More To Promote Electronics Recycling and Reuse

A recently released report by the Government Accountability Office found that the federal government should provide more incentives to encourage the recycling and reuse of electronic equipment.  Their investigation found that the cost currently charged to recycle this equipment discourages consumers from protecting the environment by recycling since federal regulations allow for landfill disposal of such items.  The report recommends the EPA propose legislation to promote recycling and reuse as well as guarantee safe disassembly of electronics shipped to other countries.

Green Holiday Tips

The holidays are traditionally a season of excess, and this is evidenced by the increased input in our landfills during this time of the year.  Some suggestions to reduce waste during the holidays are to send electronic mail or telephone greetings instead of cards, use alternative wrapping materials such as tins, decorative boxes, or reusable gift bags as a substitute for paper, carry a canvas bag when shopping rather than accumulating store sacks, and use recycled or edible tree decorations.  Gift ideas can include homemade baked goods, event tickets, gift certificates, or IOU’s for household chores.  Many more suggestions on environmentally suitable holiday practices may be found at:  http://www.musc.edu/recycle/holidays.
