They are able to use all the wood waste created in Lincoln. Wood waste from municipalities, builders, businesses, and manufacturers is needed as the need for this commodity continues to grow rapidly.

Another Bright Idea Campaign

The Nebraska CFL Recycling Pilot "Another Bright Idea" ended on November 30, 2008. The pilot program resulted in a total of 717 bulbs collected during the program and 115 bulbs have been collected since the program ended.

During the three-month pilot program, September through November 2008, Omaha area residents were able to take their CFLs to any of the 11 Omaha libraries. Lincoln area residents were able to dispose of their CFLs at 5 hardware locations and their linear tubes, up to 4 feet, at 1 hardware location. In Omaha, residents were able to recycle their bulbs for free. In Lincoln, residents had to pay $0.60 per CFL and $0.45 per linear tube. Lincoln residents did receive a coupon for $0.60 off their purchase of a new CFL when they brought in a bulb for recycling.

The pilot program allowed WasteCap to collect data on the feasibility of establishing a network of business locations to take back fluorescent bulbs from the public. WasteCap was also able to compare the number of bulbs recycled based on location and the cost to the residents. Different forms of advertising and marketing were used during the program. WasteCap was able to collect data on the most efficient form of advertising.

This pilot program of WasteCap Nebraska is supported by funding from the Nebraska Environmental Trust and made possible with the assistance of many program partners.

WasteCap's Finishing Technologies Certification Program

WasteCap Nebraska is announcing the completion of their Finishing Technologies Certification class curriculum. The new curriculum complements a state-of-the-art virtual reality paint training system designed by the Iowa Waste Reduction Center for use by auto body and industrial surface coatings painters. The class was developed as part of a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) intended to help painters meet the requirements of new certification rules by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and enforced by the NDEQ. Each painter passing the course will receive the required 5-year certification. The program and training materials are designed to help a painter reduce paint waste; save money on materials and reduce environmental emissions. The first training classes will be offered in February in partnership with Southeast Community College.

The VirtualPaint™ training system is proven technology used by the military and has numerous direct benefits for businesses and the environment. Painters trained using this system have increased their transfer efficiencies by 19% while decreasing their material consumption by 13%, saving $450-1000 in product savings per large commercial painting project. These increased efficiencies also mean significantly less overspray and hazardous waste generation as well as improved product quality. Air pollution may also decrease as a result of the training with a 12.6% reduction in emissions demonstrated. For a small facility, this could equate to a 1.5 ton emission decrease per year. Public health is directly impacted by reductions in industrial air pollutants which contribute to a number of chronic and acute health conditions.

"The VirtualPaint™ project uses new and innovative technology that will eliminate not only solid waste that would go to landfills or hazardous waste facilities, but also air and water pollution. In addition, the partnership between WasteCap Nebraska, Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, Southeast Community College, Stephenson Truck Repair, General Dynamics and NDEQ ensures a large pool of available expertise and support while ensuring that the training provided will be promoted and available all across Nebraska," says NDEQ Waste Planning and Aid Unit Supervisor Steve Danahy.

See the Upcoming Events section for class dates and registration information.
