Harris Overpass Materials are Recycled

Husker Ready-Mixed Concrete and TCW Construction Inc. took on the task of recycling 10,000 tons of concrete rubble created from the destruction of the Lincoln Harris Overpass. The company crushed the rubble into aggregate rock which can be used as base layers for roads, pipes, driveways, sidewalks, floors and patios. A portion of the materials have been used for an Interstate 80 project between Lincoln and Omaha while some of the other recycled material will be used in the construction of the new overpass.

Electronics Update

E-cycling by Mail

The U.S. Postal Service (Washington) began a pilot program offering free “mail back of unwanted electronics”. The program — currently running at 1,500 locations in 10 cities — offers consumers free pre-paid mailers, allowing them to ship unwanted electronic devices, including digital cameras, inkjet cartridges, personal digital assistants and MP3 players, to e-scrap processor Clover Technologies Group (Ottawa, Illinois).

The postage for the mailers will be paid for by Clover Technologies, which will handle all equipment gathered under the mail back program. The company promises a zero-waste-to-landfill policy, saying that it "does everything it can to avoid contributing any materials to the nation's landfills."

If the pilot program is successful in the participating locations, which include post offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Washington D.C. and other cities in California, Illinois, Maryland and Virginia, it may be rolled out nationally in the fall.

Paper Recycling Survey Released

The American Forest & Paper Association released a survey showing that 56 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. in 2007 was diverted to recycling programs. This record high was achieved five years in advance of the industry’s goal of 55 percent diversion. The AF&PA has set a new goal of 60 percent recovery by 2012. The survey revealed that 54.3 million tons of paper was recovered throughout 2007.

Minnesota Introduces Bottle Bills

The Minnesota House has introduced three bills that would create a beverage container redemption program for the state.

The first bill creates a comprehensive system that covers any "drink in liquid form for human consumption." The measure requires manufacturers to register in the state by July 1, 2009, setting registration fees for bottlers in the state at $5,000 for manufacturers that sell 10,000 or more bottles annually and $2,500 for those that sell fewer than 10,000 bottles. It also would cause them to be responsible for setting up collection and recycling programs, encouraging them to work with retailers, wholesalers, local governments, etc., to do so.

Furthermore, the measure requires that manufacturers achieve a recycling rate of no less than 80-percent for the previous program year. Penalties under the measure were left blank for later inclusion.

The second bill establishes a redemption value of no less than 10-cents for each beverage container sold in state while the third bill enacts a landfill ban on all covered beverage containers effective July 1, 2010.
