e·Scrap Nebraska

Project Description
e·Scrap Nebraska is a small grant program funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust and administered by WasteCap Nebraska. It is intended to offset the costs of planning and executing an electronics recycling collection event. Small communities and under-served areas of the state are the primary targets of this program and will be given special consideration for funding.
Grant applicants will need a minimum of 6 weeks to plan and organize a successful collection event. Grant recipients will receive a Computer Collection Planning Guide, educational and marketing materials, forms to track metrics and cash collections, a template of a recycling service provider contract, a list of approved recyclers and guidance from WasteCap Nebraska in planning their event.
All electronics recycling fees have been negotiated by WasteCap Nebraska and the Nebraska Environmental Trust. Recycling service providers have been chosen based on their adherence to best management practices, experience and a negotiated rate. The recycling service provider will bill the Grantee directly for their services based on the number of pounds collected.
All participant fees are to be collected by the Grantee. WasteCap Nebraska does not fund free collection events. Each vehicle or business entity will be allowed to drop off electronic equipment at the following rates:
  • One monitor at no cost; additional monitors $10.00 each
  • 50 pounds of peripheral equipment at no cost; additional peripherals at $0.25 per pound
  • One television for $5.00; additional televisions at $0.25 per pound.
Grant funds will be released to Grantee following a collection event, after all reports are submitted to, and reviewed by WasteCap Nebraska staff. Grantees are required to match a portion of grant funds through in-kind donations or cash expenditures. (See sample list of allowable matches.)
How much is each grant?
The maximum amounts for each event by funding category are listed below. It is not necessary to apply for the maximum amount in each category. For example, the maximum amount in “Contractual Electronics Recycling Fees” could be applied for ($4,175) and the remaining funding categories could be designated as a match. WasteCap will supply some event supplies, educational flyers, and radio and TV advertising materials at no cost to the grantee. (See sample of supplies and materials provided.)
Collection Event Supplies: $675
Advertising/Educational Printing & Postage: $415
Event Planning Personnel Time: $2,800
Contractual Electronics Recycling Fees: $4,175
Total Maximum Funding per Event: $8,065
How will my application be evaluated?
WasteCap Nebraska staff will review applications and evaluate them according to the following general criteria:
  • Unique Need – Community has had limited or no collection options in the past;
  • Experience with similar events – Knowledge of logistical planning for traffic, experience working with volunteers, etc.
  • A readily available source of volunteers
What is the applicant's obligation?
WasteCap Nebraska will NOT fund free collection events. Event participants will pay the recycling fees according to the rate schedule, which the Grantee will collect the day of the event. Grantees are responsible for any and all expenses incurred for the collection event, including any recycling fees incurred in excess of grant funds. Grant recipients agree to use an approved recycler from the list provided by WasteCap Nebraska exclusively.
