What is Product Stewardship?

WasteCap Nebraska’s Green Ambassadors program can help Nebraska businesses and organizations see benefits through product stewardship.  The program goal is to meet with Nebraska’s business leaders to provide education on product stewardship, increasing recycling, reducing waste, and identifying other uses for the many consumer products that make their way to Nebraska’s landfills.  Exercising electronics product stewardship alone could produce a $3.7 million benefit to Nebraskans according to the Product Stewardship Institute.  In considering paint, medical sharps, phone books, fluorescent lamps, pesticides, household batteries, and thermostats, Nebraskans could see a total annual benefit of $13,326,000.

Environmental stewardship does not only benefit Nebraska environmentally, enhancing our health and quality of life, it also benefits the state fiscally.  Educating business and community leaders and increasing their knowledge on how being “green” can increase their profitability and expand our economy is a surefire way to expand environmental stewardship across Nebraska.  The Green Ambassadors program will show Nebraska business leaders how this can be accomplished in their own businesses, providing a greater benefit to all Nebraskans.

Could your business help Nebraska achieve a potential benefit of over $3,700,000? Request a program today to learn how!

WasteCap Nebraska, along with several other non-profit organizations and municipalities has created a Nebraska Product Stewardship Toolkit as a resource for both professionals and beginners to find out about existing collection and recycling programs and to teach others about product stewardship. It contains videos, presentations, and other outreach materials.

Grant funding for this effort comes from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality through a grant received by WasteCap Nebraska.
