e-Scrap Approved Recyclers 2011 Escrap Guide and Attachmentse-Scrap Application

Project Description

e·Scrap Nebraska is a small-grants program funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust and administered by WasteCap Nebraska.  It is intended to offset the costs of planning and executing an electronics recycling collection event, and to simplify the process of organizing an event by providing contracts, forms and marketing materials.  Small communities and under-served areas of the state are the primary targets of this program and will be given special consideration for funding.

Who Can Apply?

Any community recycling program or business, public or private, anywhere within the State of Nebraska, regardless of size, may apply for funds from this grant fund.

Looking for an e-Scrap collection event in your area?

Especially if your community has not had an e-Scrap collection event in the last 3 years, it may qualify for a grant! Contact your local officials, a local business or community organization and inform them of this opportunity to manage the growing problem of electronic waste in your community.

Planning Your Event?

Grant applicants should allow a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks to plan and organize a successful collection event.  In preparation for the event, grant recipients should download the 2011 Escrap Guide and Attachments, which includes a Computer Collection Planning Guide, educational and marketing materials, forms to track metrics and cash collections, contract forms, and a list of approved recyclers.  Also view our list of approved recyclers.   All electronics recycling fees have been negotiated by WasteCap Nebraska.  Recycling service providers have been chosen based on their adherence to best management practices, experience and a negotiated rate. The recycling service provider will bill the Grantee directly for their services based on the number of pounds collected.

How much funding is available for an e-Scrap collection event?

The maximum amounts for each event by funding category are listed below.  It is not necessary to apply for the maximum amount in each category.  For example, the maximum amount in “Contractual Electronics Recycling Fees” could be applied for ($4,175) and the remaining funding categories could be designated as a match.  WasteCap will supply some event supplies, educational flyers, and radio and TV advertising materials at no cost to the grantee.  (See sample of supplies and materials provided in the 2011 Escrap Guide and Attachments.)

Collection Event Supplies: $675
Advertising/Educational Printing & Postage: $415
Event Planning Personnel Time: $2,800
Contractual Electronics Recycling Fees: $4,175
Total Maximum Funding per Event: $8,065

Please note: Organizers are required to charge event participants according to the rates negotiated by WasteCap (found in the 2011 Escrap Guide and Attachments and contract).  All fees collected will be counted as part of  your match on the reimbursement request submitted to WasteCap Nebraska after the event.

How will my application be evaluated?

WasteCap Nebraska staff will review applications and evaluate and prioritize them according to the following general criteria:

• Unique Need – Community has had limited or no collection options in the past;
• Experience with similar events – Knowledge of logistical planning for traffic, experience working with volunteers, etc.
• A readily available source of volunteers

What is the applicant’s obligation?

WasteCap Nebraska will NOT fund free collection events.  Event participants will pay the recycling fees according to the rate schedule, which the Grantee will collect the day of the event.  Grantees are responsible for any and all expenses incurred for the collection event, including any recycling fees incurred in excess of grant funds.  Grant recipients agree to use an approved recycler from the list provided by WasteCap Nebraska exclusively.

When can we apply?

Grants will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.  Please allow a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks to apply and prepare for a collection event.

The applications will be processed promptly and awarded until the fund is exhausted.
